Yesterday, mainstream media broke the news about a new levy that will be paid by anyone who is travelling via Changi Airport. Additionally, there will be a slight increase in the Passenger Service and Security Fee. If you are bamboozled on what is going on and how much more you have to pay, even if you're going for a short getaway, let me break it down for you. 1) Airport Development Levy According to a press release by the Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore (CAAS), passengers who begin their trips from Changi Airport will be charged an additional $10.80 - that's on top of the Passenger Service and Security Fee, which is at $27.90. But hold your horses and read on. Image: Ronnie Chua/ shutterstock.com 2) Transit passengers will be affected too Pretty much anyone who is travelling through Changi Aiport will have to cough up some moolah, but for transit passengers, it will be a mere $3. Imagine; transiting in Changi Airport for like 1 hour and being charged $3 for that. 3) Passenger Service and Security Fee That is not all. On top of that, the Passenger and Security Fee will see an increase of $2.50, Channel NewsAsia reported. And, it will increase annually by $2.50 till 2024. Yikes, that's like a total increase of $17.50! Image: tenor.com 4) When will it take effect Take out your calendar and mark the date—1 July 2017! The Airport Department Levy will be reflected on your ticket price, which means to say that, if you book your tickets before 1 July, you can escape the fee, regardless of the departure date. #justsaying 5) How much more will you be paying According to Channel NewsAsia, your passenger fee is now at $34 but after 1 July, you will be forking out a total of $47.30. Here's the breakdown: Passenger Service and Security Fee ($30.40) Aviation Levy ($6.10) Airport Development Levy ($10.80) Soon you will be paying well above $50 with the annual increment of the Passenger Service and Security Fee! 6) What is it for? The Airport Development Levy is to help fund the Changi East project which includes a three-runway system and the much-talked-about Terminal 5 which is set to be completed around 2030. 7) It is a "second airport" According to a Facebook post by Transport Minister Khaw Boon Wan, "T5 is actually our second airport". "Government will be the main funder through grant. CAAS and CAG will dip into their reserves and future surpluses to help fund T5," he said. He also said that airport users will also have to do their part in funding the project and that the project will benefit the people, economy and the businesses. Just so you know, the project is set to run into tens of billions, so in the grand scheme of things, $47.30 seems paltry.
