There are always some wild stories that come out of the K-pop industry, from crazy Telegram group chats to stalkers who know everything about an idol to the core.
Now get ready for an unexpected one. Former k-pop star Wu Yi Fan, or Kris Wu, has been sentenced to 13 years of jail time for rape.
Wait. What?
It’s an unfortunate piece of news, but it’s true.
And it’s from the popular boy band EXO’s former member, Canadian Kris Wu.
K-Pop Star Kris Wu Sentenced to 13 Years’ Jailtime
The case started last year when a 19-year-old Chinese beauty influencer, Du Meizhu, accused the star of date rape in 2020 when she was only 17.
Following the news, major brands such as Louis Vuitton and L’Oreal Men started pulling out of deals with Kris.
Du started her accusations on Weibo, saying that Kris had committed date rape and that he had targeted underage girls.
She mentioned that Kris had invited her to his home under the pretense of an “audition” for a music video and forced her to drink alcohol until she passed out.
In an interview with NetEase, she said that Kris had never used a condom on her or his other victims.
Apparently, she was also given hush money of 500,000 yuan (~S$95,800) but she returned it.
Kris’ and his team denied the allegations and said on Weibo that he has never seduced, drugged, or raped someone and would “walk into prison himself” if it were true.
Following her post, Du faced quite a lot of backlash from the former idol’s fans that she had to quit college and “give up on her artistic achievement” to protect herself.
Turns out her allegations were true.
Kris was detained in Beijing on 30 July 2020.
According to investigations, Kris had invited three women to his home and forced sexual activities onto them without their knowledge, some of which included underaged females.
“It was found that the defendant Wu Yifan (Kris Wu) had forced sexual relations with three women at his residence from November to December 2020 when they were drunk and did not know or were not able to resist,” said the Chaoyang District court.
It was also revealed that Kris had arranged a group to participate in sexual promiscuity in 2018, which added to his time.
His sentences included 11 years and six months imprisonment for rape and another one year and 10 months for the crime of gathering people to conduct adultery.
The whole scandal has started a Girls Help Girls trend, China’s version of the #metoo movement.
Many females started to voice their experiences on social media, and the hashtags “girls help girls”, “girls helping girls”, and “girls helping girls time” had to be censored on Chinese social media.
But the damage has already been done.
Even so, Du is glad that the case has finally ended and hopes that she can continue pursuing her dreams.
Fined For Tax Evasion
If you thought that was all he had done, think again.
Tax authorities in Beijing found out that Kris had avoided paying 95 million yuan in taxes between 2019 and 2020 by hiding his personal income.
They also revealed that Kris did not pay 84 million yuan in taxes.
The court then administrated a fine of 600 million yuan for tax evasion, which included the fees for late payments and missing payments.
How Did Kris Wu Become So Famous?
Kris was one of China’s biggest stars.
His career kickstarted with K-pop group EXO under SM Entertainment. The band debuted in 2012, and Kris trained for five years before it, after his audition in Vancouver in 2007.
He was also part of EXO-M, a subgroup of EXO that was meant to push out mandarin songs.
EXO hit it big the moment they debuted, and they won Best New Asian Artist at MAMA Awards in 2013 and won the Daesang Award at Seoul Music Awards after only one year after their debut.
Despite the fame, Kris left EXO in 2014.
He filed a lawsuit against SM Entertainment for disregarding his health and having unfair profit distributions. The case has been settled with Kris signing a new contract that allows him to work with other recording labels or agencies outside of Korea and China.
The contract was signed in 2016 and will last till 2022.
His career did not die the moment he left EXO, though. In fact, it continued to rise steadily.
Kris began appearing on Chinese variety shows and signed with Universal Music Group, and made his debut as a solo artist and actor.
He also worked with major brands like Louis Vuitton, Porsche, and Bvlgari, but all of them dropped him when the rape accusations came out.
The star will be deported from China after serving his 13-year jail time.
The general punishment for offenders found guilty of raping a victim who is 14 years of age or older in Singapore is a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison as well as a fine or caning.
Those found guilty of aggravated rape will get a minimum of 8 years in prison and a maximum of 20 years in prison and at least 12 strokes of the cane.
