A 56-year-old photographer was 150km into a 205km bicycle challenge when he suddenly collapsed and died of cardiac arrest.
Before his collapse, he had stopped once to get a short rest after feeling discomfort in his chest. Despite this, he continued cycling without seeking medical attention.
Here’s what happened.
Suddenly Collapsed While Cycling Through NTU
56-year-old professional photographer Huang Xuguang (transliterated from Chinese) participated in a 205km bicycle challenge with three other friends. It started on the night of 30 December 2022.
However, at 6:51 am on 31 December 2022, he suddenly collapsed at the 150km mark while cycling through Nanyang Technological University (NTU). The trail was supposed to lead the cyclists past a slope in NTU and toward Mount Faber.
According to a fellow cyclist, Huang felt chest discomfort halfway through the ride but continued to cycle after a short rest. It seems like Huang had felt chest discomfort again before his sudden collapse, leading friends and family to conclude that it was a case of cardiac arrest.
Although his teammates conducted cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) on him and called an ambulance, the man fell into a coma while being sent to Ng Teng Fong General Hospital. He died shortly after.
Family: Never Expected This To Happen
Huang’s wife, 56-year-old Wu Xiuli (transliterated from Chinese), said that this 205km challenge was something Huang had agreed to do with his friends for a long time. They were finally going to complete the challenge before 2022 ended.
A friend notified her that her husband had passed out and was sent to the hospital. The hospital also called to tell her that he was in critical condition. Unfortunately, he passed on before she could get there.
“I was on the phone with him at 5 am that morning… I never expected that he’d have this accident just an hour later. We even went cycling the morning before, where he shot and edited a video for me. I didn’t expect it would be the last time he does that,” said a choked-up Wu.
The couple had just returned from a Genting Highlands vacation on 29 December 2022 and were planning to go to Thailand in February 2023. They had also just celebrated their two daughters’ birthdays in December 2022.
