CNY is coming, so it’s time to get your house in order! How are you possibly going to get everything looking shiny and new when there’s so little time on your hands? Don’t worry, these 10 spring-cleaning hacks will do make your life easy. Got a Microwave Oven? Steam It Out There’s always the issue of wiping out dirt and oily bits from the sides and door of the microwave. All you need to do is get a microwaveable bowl and fill it with a cup of water, 2 tablespoons of white vinegar, and if you have it on hand, a couple of essential oil drops. Shut the door and switch the micro on for 5 minutes. It’ll work its magic and make it super easy to remove the dirt! Make Your Stove Shine All it takes to get your stove grease-free is baking soda. You could powder the surface up and then wipe it down with a wet cloth until you’re satisfied. Get Rid of Water Rings Yep, we're talking about those stains on the coffee table that won’t go away. They’re a constant reminder that you forgot to use a coaster or that your coffee is already overflowing. Say goodbye to water rings by applying some heat with the help of your trusty hairdryer. Once it’s gone, just rub in a bit of olive oil if the surface is wood. This is to help recondition the spot. Wipe Your Fridge Down The best way to clean your fridge is with a solution that’s made up of 4 cups of hot water and 2 tablespoons of baking soda. Dip your sponge and start cleaning. Wipe it the second time with a damp cloth. The final round is with a dry towel. Now suddenly it's so shiny, you can see your reflection clearly like it's a mirror! Fill the bottle up with an 8:1 water-vinegar ratio, and shake it up inside. Start spraying the windows and wipe them down with the newspapers. Crazy as it may sound, it gets the job done! Don't have newspapers at home coz nobody reads them anymore? Use a microfibre cloth to wipe the dirt away instead. Or just buy them from the nearest 7-Eleven because here's a pro-tip: no one reads them but they're still being sold. Bathroom Clean-Ups You can get rid of soap scum with a ratio of 1:1 of white vinegar and water. Spray it on and leave it for a couple of minutes, then wipe the surface down. Did you know that it's also a good idea to clean the toilet brush? Just pin it down between the toilet seat and the toilet rim, and pour some bleach (like Clorox) over the brush's bristles. You can leave it there for a couple of minutes, and then wash it down with some clean water. Get Your Cabinets Shiny If PM Lee keeps his cabinet fresh, you should too. It’s usually pretty simple with some hot water and a paper towel to clean. Grease can be fixed with a paste of a tablespoon of baking soda and half a tablespoon each of water and dishwashing soap. Pull Your Furniture Out You need to pull your sofas out and vacuum all the dirt that you’ve probably not seen in ages. While you’re at it, make use of the upholstery vacuum head and suck out all the debris that’s in the crevices. All the Unreachable Places Yep, time to work on the fans and the bits of dust that’s starting to appear around the house. It’s super useful to do this with an extendable duster. There’s a fun hack for fans – use a pillowcase to capture excess dust. Just slide the pillowcase over each fan blade while pressing on the sides to get the dust within the casing. Repeat until you’re happy with your work. Another spot that needs to be cleaned but is out of reach is the sliding door and shower door tracks. The amount of dirt and dust getting neglected there will give you a shock. If you can, remove the screens for the best results. Otherwise, just go ahead by vacuuming with the crevice tool (if you have one, or just use the vacuum as-is). When you're done with the vacuum bit, make a mixture with a teaspoon of dishwashing liquid, two cups of warm water, and another teaspoon of household ammonia. Use a brush to scrub with this mixture, and then wash it off with tap water. A pressure nozzle or hose is bound to make this cleaning up a faster job. Your Devices (Even Your Phone!) Did you know that there are more germs on your phone than on a toilet seat? Switch it off, and wipe it with a disinfecting wipe. Let the wipe’s moisture work its magic for a couple of minutes, then wipe it dry with a paper towel. Do the same for all your remotes and computer mouse too! Your laptop's keyboards need some love too. The first thing to do is ensure it's not plugged into a power source and is switched off (duh!). You'll now have to flip it upside down and give it a nice shake to get any bits of dirt (and food) out. Get a compressed air can and tilt the laptop at a 75-degree angle and spray the keyboard. Smaller particles can be cleaned off this way. Finally, dip a cotton swab in a bit of alcohol to clean the keyboard's ridges and top. This takes out minute grime, body soil, and disinfects at one go.
