When everyone's going apeshit over a certain Korean phone that can be folded and a certain US phone that looks like a bubble tea with just three pearls, Xiaomi just released the Mi Mix Alpha, a phone that’s almost entirely made of screen. I kid you not. Image: Giphy This shit is cray. Screen protector sellers are going to have a fit. What’s With That Screen? Remember Samsung came out with the Galaxy Fold, I thought that was super trippy. Dubbing it a concept phone, Xiaomi’s Mi Mix Alpha takes that up a notch (hehe geddit) and seeks to redefine the ‘traditional’ waterfall display. The display it features boasts a whopping 180.6% screen to body ratio. Image: The Verge Yes, you heard that right. Pressure-sensitive volume buttons and your somewhat familiar status icons (battery levels, telco, 4g status, etc.) are now live on the side of the screen. Image: The Verge I’m not exactly sure about the usability of it all, but damn I want it so bad. That Camera The display isn’t the only thing that seeks to impress. Not to be beaten, the Mi Mix Alpha boasts Samsung’s rather impressive 108-megapixel lens, which outputs 27-megapixel photos (after pixel binning) with better low-light capabilities. Image: Gizmochina It also features a 20-megapixel ultrawide camera with a 117-degree field of view, as well as a 12-megapixel telephoto lens. It all translates to one thing: It takes pretty damn good photos. What About Its Specs? We can all agree that this is a phone meant for Xiaomi to flex its technological skills. As such, the rest of its specifications are no slouch either. Featuring a Qualcomm Snapdragon 855+ processor, 12GB of RAM, 512GB onboard storage, a 4,050mAh battery with 40W wired fast charging and a whole bevvy of sensors, you definitely won’t be left wanting. As the icing on the cake, it also has 5G radios, so there’s no fear of the phone becoming obsolete anytime soon. You can drool at the phone here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v2N9d5AjChi0 Let’s Talk Price So we’ve come to this point, and it all sounds good. You’re so ready to take your wallet out to get this phone to show off to your friends. But hold up, is your wallet deep enough? The phone will reportedly cost a hefty 19,999 yuan (~S$3,869). That’s way more expensive than the already expensive Samsung Galaxy Fold, which retails in Singapore for S$3,088. I can’t believe I’m saying this, but the Samsung Galaxy Fold might be the more budget-friendly option if you’re into the category of phones with curved screens? Although I’d be honest, at that price point, I think I’m going to be a normie and stick to something like the comparatively cheaper iPhones or the Samsung Galaxy S10. The phone will be launched somewhere in December, though it's not mentioned if it'll available outside of China.
