So the both of you have officially gotten hitched and are now preparing to get your own home? Congratulations! Many young couples fantasize about owning a large home so that they will be able to have more space, nicer furnishings and a reasonably sized area for hosting get-togethers with friends and family. But take it from someone who decided to get a 3-room flat instead of a larger one as our first abode (also known as, me): you may actually be better off with a smaller living space for a start. Here’s why. 1. Cleaning won’t be such a hassle Seriously, do you want to spend your entire weekend on household chores and getting all tired out from them that you don’t have the energy to do anything else? I highly doubt so. A smaller home will ensure that you only spend about half a day (or less) completing all the necessary chores from cleaning the floors to washing your clothes, and leaves you with a weekend and a half to enjoy the activities you want to do as a couple. 2. You don’t have to spend so much on the renovation Renovation costs can be a bxxxh. If you have seen articles on couples overspending on their renovation, you may be one of them with a larger home because let’s face it: A larger home means you need to fill in more spaces which then leads to a bigger budget required for furnishings and fixtures. 3. You don’t feel so lonely. It’s only the two of you so when one of you isn’t around, the other is left in a home that feels too empty. It can be a disconcerting feeling especially when you move in and out of the empty rooms, almost like you own a mansion with multiple rooms but not quite. Even with the both of you at home, you can imagine the resonating silence when the two of you are engaged in your own activities. 4.You get to achieve the cosy feel more easily You know how it is like when you go overseas and live in a small but cosy room? It works the same for a smaller flat. When it is just the both of you for a start, you will probably want to feel cosy and comfortable in your own little abode. A smaller flat can achieve that feeling much more easily than a larger flat because once you are settled in, the place will feel less empty and you will definitely feel like this is it: you now own your own cushy little crib. 5.You get to practise self-control You don't buy items you don’t need anymore which will help in saving you loads of cash. Of course the main reason is that you don’t have a lot of space to store them in anymore. Now you only buy stuff you need when you really need them and when the ones you currently possess are worn out enough to be thrown away and replaced. 6.Having a smaller home spurs you to be selective about the possessions you keep. When you move into your new home, there will definitely be loads of stuff you will need to bring over from your parents’ home. And because the both of you obviously occupied separate bedrooms in separate homes, bringing all your possessions together in a smaller place will encourage the two of you to be selective about the items you wish to keep and those you wish to discard. You will be thankful at the end of the day because thanks to a smaller abode, you managed to finally declutter like you have been wanting to do for the last 10 years. 7. You have an excuse to not invite too many people to your home. I am guilty of this last reason because after I moved into my 3-room flat and held a massive, spilling-over-the-edges housewarming party, I have held less than three more hangouts since. While that may sound like a minus point more than a plus, hear me out. Imagine the amount of cleaning up you will need to do after a large party. And get this, you need to have your house cleaned before you go take your shower and go to bed. That is just too much work for me to handle especially when I’m already so tired after everything.
